YouTube link anatomy: one video, three link shapes
Every YouTube video and Short has one canonical ID, but YouTube hands it to you in three different link shapes depending on where you tap Share. SnapDown accepts all of them — knowing what each looks like just makes it obvious when a copied link is broken or missing a character.
The desktop watch link
The classic format from a browser address bar. The v= parameter holds the 11-character video ID — that string is the video. Extra bits like &t=30s (a timestamp) or &list= (a playlist) are safe to leave on; we ignore them.
The Shorts link
Shorts live on their own /shorts/ path instead of /watch, but the ID after it works identically. Paste the whole thing — a Short is just a vertical video to the downloader, and it saves the same way.
The youtu.be share link
The short link the mobile Share → Copy link sheet produces. Same ID, no v= — just the code straight after the slash. This is the one most people paste, and it's the fastest to grab on a phone.
The YouTube quality ladder

iPhone & iPad

Download won't start? The usual causes
Nearly every failed YouTube download comes down to one of these — the symptom, why it happens, and the fix.
"Video unavailable" or nothing resolves
The video is private, deleted, or region-locked, so YouTube won't serve the file to anyone without access. Confirm the link opens in a normal browser tab while logged out — if it doesn't play there, it can't be downloaded here either.
Age-restricted or sign-in-required videos
YouTube gates some content behind an age check that requires a logged-in account. SnapDown only reaches publicly available content, so these can't be fetched — that's a YouTube restriction, not a bug on our side.
You copied the channel, not the video
A link like youtube.com/@channel points at a profile, not a single clip — there's nothing to download. Open the specific video or Short first, then use Share → Copy link so the URL carries a video ID.
It worked yesterday and suddenly stopped
YouTube periodically changes how it serves video, which can briefly break third-party downloaders until they adapt. If a known-good public link fails, wait a little and retry — these hiccups are usually short-lived, and we track them closely.
