Download in 3 Taps

No app, no signup, no extension. Works on any device.

1

Copy the video or Shorts URL

Open the video or Short on YouTube, tap Share, then 'Copy Link'. Works on the app and browser, and youtu.be short links are fine too.

2

Paste & Extract

Paste the link above. We connect to YouTube's servers and extract the original HD video file with its audio track.

3

Download MP4

Click Download. The video saves as an MP4 file — plays anywhere, no special app needed.

YouTube link anatomy: one video, three link shapes

Every YouTube video and Short has one canonical ID, but YouTube hands it to you in three different link shapes depending on where you tap Share. SnapDown accepts all of them — knowing what each looks like just makes it obvious when a copied link is broken or missing a character.

The desktop watch link

youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

The classic format from a browser address bar. The v= parameter holds the 11-character video ID — that string is the video. Extra bits like &t=30s (a timestamp) or &list= (a playlist) are safe to leave on; we ignore them.

The Shorts link

youtube.com/shorts/aBcDeFgHiJk

Shorts live on their own /shorts/ path instead of /watch, but the ID after it works identically. Paste the whole thing — a Short is just a vertical video to the downloader, and it saves the same way.

The youtu.be share link

youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

The short link the mobile Share → Copy link sheet produces. Same ID, no v= — just the code straight after the slash. This is the one most people paste, and it's the fastest to grab on a phone.

The YouTube quality ladder

YouTube stores every video in several resolutions and streams whichever fits your screen and connection. SnapDown reads the full ladder and hands you the top rung the uploader actually provided — you never get the downscaled mobile stream by accident.

Quality
Resolution
Best for
4K
2160p
Large screens, archiving — when the creator uploaded in 4K
Full HD
1080p
The sweet spot — crisp on any phone or laptop
HD
720p
Smaller files, quick shares over mobile data
Audio only
MP3 / M4A
Music, podcasts, and voice — the soundtrack without the video

One rule the app hides from you: SnapDown can never exceed the source. If a creator only uploaded 720p, 720p is the highest file that exists — no tool can invent 1080p that was never recorded. What we guarantee is the best encoding YouTube actually stores, which is often higher than the stream your phone receives on a weak connection.

What you see before you download

Most downloaders hand you one button and a surprise. SnapDown shows you the whole picture first — every quality rung with its real file size, the sponsor segments sitting inside the video, and the audio and thumbnail as separate saves.

Sponsor segments, flagged

We check the video against SponsorBlock's community database and label what's inside — sponsor reads, self-promo, intros, outros, interaction reminders and filler. Clean videos are marked clean, so you know before you save.

Exact size on every rung

Each quality option carries its measured file size — a typical Short runs about 3.8 MB at 1080p and 2.4 MB at 720p. On a metered connection you can pick the rung that fits your data, not guess and cancel halfway.

Audio and cover art too

Pull the soundtrack on its own as an MP3, or grab the full-resolution thumbnail — useful when you want the audio for an edit, or the cover frame without screenshotting and cropping it yourself.

Worth being straight about the limit: SponsorBlock is crowd-sourced, so a brand-new upload may have no segments submitted yet. When nothing is flagged, that means nobody has marked it — not that the video is guaranteed sponsor-free.

Shorts or a regular video? Both download here

The two formats behave differently on YouTube, but SnapDown treats them the same — paste either link and get an MP4 with audio.

YouTube Shorts

  • Vertical 9:16 format (mobile-first)
  • Up to 3 minutes long
  • Lives on the /shorts/ path
  • Swipeable feed, no download button
  • Often built around trending audio

Regular video

  • Horizontal 16:9 format
  • Any length, from clips to hours
  • Lives on the /watch path
  • Offline save is Premium-only, app-locked
  • Search- and recommendation-driven

Where the file lands on each device

The download is the same everywhere — a plain MP4 — but each operating system files it in a different place. Here's exactly where to look and how to move it into your gallery.

iPhone & iPad

Open this page in Safari, paste the link, and tap Download. Safari drops the MP4 into Files → Downloads. To get it into your camera roll, open the file, tap the Share icon, and choose Save Video. iOS 13+ handles this natively — no shortcuts app required.

Android

In Chrome, paste and tap Download; the MP4 goes straight to your Downloads folder and usually appears in Gallery or Google Photos automatically. If it doesn't show up, open your Files app and tap the video once to let the gallery index it.

Windows & Mac

On desktop the file lands in your browser's Downloads folder as a standard MP4 that plays in any player — VLC, QuickTime, Windows Media Player. Right-click the download and choose Show in folder to jump straight to it.

Download won't start? The usual causes

Nearly every failed YouTube download comes down to one of these — the symptom, why it happens, and the fix.

"Video unavailable" or nothing resolves

The video is private, deleted, or region-locked, so YouTube won't serve the file to anyone without access. Confirm the link opens in a normal browser tab while logged out — if it doesn't play there, it can't be downloaded here either.

Age-restricted or sign-in-required videos

YouTube gates some content behind an age check that requires a logged-in account. SnapDown only reaches publicly available content, so these can't be fetched — that's a YouTube restriction, not a bug on our side.

You copied the channel, not the video

A link like youtube.com/@channel points at a profile, not a single clip — there's nothing to download. Open the specific video or Short first, then use Share → Copy link so the URL carries a video ID.

It worked yesterday and suddenly stopped

YouTube periodically changes how it serves video, which can briefly break third-party downloaders until they adapt. If a known-good public link fails, wait a little and retry — these hiccups are usually short-lived, and we track them closely.

Downloading responsibly

Saving a video for yourself and republishing someone else's work are very different things. A quick line on where personal use ends.

Fine for personal use

  • Watching offline on a flight or commute
  • Saving a tutorial or recipe for reference
  • Keeping your own uploads as a backup
  • Pulling audio from a track you already own

Ask permission first

  • Re-uploading a clip as your own content
  • Using footage in a monetized video
  • Redistributing copyrighted music
  • Any commercial use without a license

YouTube Shorts downloader FAQ

Open any Short on YouTube, tap Share, then 'Copy Link'. Paste the URL in the box above and click Download. The video (with audio) saves to your device in seconds — no login and nothing to install.

Yes. "YT Shorts downloader" is just the shorthand people use for this tool, and it is free with no daily cap for normal use. Paste a link, pick a quality, save the MP4 — there is no account, no trial, and no watermark added to your file.

Yes. SnapDown reads every rendition YouTube stores and offers the highest one, up to 1080p Full HD in MP4 with audio merged in. If a Short was uploaded at a lower resolution, that lower file is genuinely the best that exists — no tool can add detail YouTube never received.

SnapDown checks every link against the SponsorBlock community database and shows you what is inside before you save — sponsor reads, self-promo, intros, outros, interaction reminders and filler. If nothing is flagged, the video is marked clean. One honest caveat: SponsorBlock is crowd-sourced, so a very new upload may simply have no segments submitted yet, which is not the same as being sponsor-free.

SnapDown measures each quality rung and shows the real file size next to it before you commit. A typical Short lands around 3.8 MB at 1080p and 2.4 MB at 720p, with the smallest rungs a few hundred kilobytes. That matters on a metered connection — you can pick the size that fits your data instead of starting a download and cancelling it halfway.

Yes, both are separate one-tap saves on the result card. 'Download audio only (MP3)' pulls the soundtrack without the video, which is what you want for an edit or a music clip, and 'Download Thumbnail' grabs the full-resolution cover frame so you do not have to screenshot and crop it yourself.

Downloading for personal offline viewing is generally accepted under fair use. However, re-uploading or redistributing someone else's content without permission may violate copyright.

We offer up to 1080p (Full HD) in MP4 format with audio included. Choose from 144p to 1080p depending on the original upload quality.

Yes! All downloads include full audio — music, dialogue, sound effects. We merge video and audio tracks automatically so you never get a silent file.

Yes. Open this page in Safari, paste the URL, and tap Download. Safari will show a download icon in the top-right. The video saves to your Files app.

No. You don't need to be logged in. Just copy the video URL and paste it here. Works with any public YouTube video or Short.

Age-restricted videos may not be downloadable due to YouTube's restrictions. Our tool can only access publicly available content.

Yes! SnapDown supports both regular YouTube videos (any length) and Shorts (vertical videos up to 3 minutes). Just paste any youtube.com/watch or youtube.com/shorts link.

Common reasons: the video is private, deleted, age-restricted, or region-locked. Also, YouTube occasionally changes their systems, which may cause temporary issues.

Yes. We don't ask for your YouTube login, don't install anything, and don't store your downloads or personal data. Everything is processed temporarily and discarded.
