How big is a downloaded Instagram photo?
Bigger than the 1080 pixels most guides still quote. These are the sizes this page returned when we measured the files, not numbers copied from a help article.
Instagram keeps more than 1080 pixels now
Recent uploads are stored up to 1440 pixels wide. Measured on 30 September 2026: a portrait post came back 1440×1800 and two landscape carousels 1440×959. A 1440×1800 photo weighed about 330 KB as a JPG.
Older and smaller uploads stay at 1080
A post uploaded from a smaller original, or published before the wider rung existed, is stored 1080 pixels wide — 1080×1350 for a 4:5 portrait. That is the top of what exists for that post, not a limit of the downloader.
Why a screenshot is the worse copy
A screenshot records your screen, not the photo: it is capped at your display's resolution, cropped by the app's buttons and compressed a second time. The download is the stored file itself, with nothing drawn over it.
How to check what you got
Right-click the saved JPG → Get Info on Mac, or Properties → Details on Windows. On a phone, open the photo's info panel. The width reads 1440 or 1080; anything larger from another site has been upscaled.
Downloading a carousel
A carousel is one post with up to 20 slides. Paste its link once and every slide is listed, so you choose how much of it to keep.
- Download All saves the slides one after another in the order they were posted, and shows a counter while it works.
- Download Current saves only the slide showing in the preview. Use the arrows on the preview to change it.
- The slide grid under the buttons has a download button on every thumbnail, for when you want the second and the seventh and nothing else.
- Mixed posts keep their formats: photo slides save as JPG, video slides as MP4 with sound.
- Caption and hashtags can be copied from under the preview, separately from the media.
Post links that work here
The same post has a different-looking link depending on where you copied it. To download an Instagram post, any of these will do.

Open a post from a profile grid on instagram.com and the account name appears before /p/. Same post — paste it as it is.

Some versions of the Instagram app copy this instead of the permalink. We look up the post it points to, then fetch it as usual.

Save a post on your device
The file is the same everywhere. Where it lands is not. Pick your device:

In the Instagram app, open the post, tap the share (paper plane) icon or ••• and choose Copy Link.

Open Safari, paste the link into the box above and tap Download.

Tap the download button for the photo. Safari saves it to Files → Downloads; open it, tap the share icon and choose Save Image to put it in Photos.
Tip: For a carousel, tap Download All and keep Safari open until the counter reaches the last slide.
When a post will not download
Four things that go wrong, what each one means and what to do.
"Private, age-restricted, or deleted"
Why: The account is private, the post was deleted, or Instagram restricts it to logged-in adults.
Fix: Open the link in an incognito window. If it asks you to log in, a pasted link cannot reach it. For accounts you follow, use the Private Downloader. Private Downloader →
The link is not accepted
Why: It is a profile link (instagram.com/account/) or a story link, not a post.
Fix: Open the single post and copy its own link. To save a whole profile at once, use the Bulk Downloader. Bulk Downloader →
Download All saved only the first slide
Why: The browser blocked the rest as "multiple downloads".
Fix: Click the blocked-download icon in the address bar, choose Always allow, then press Download All again.
The photo is 1080 wide, not 1440
Why: Instagram only stored the 1080 version of that post.
Fix: Nothing to fix. You have the largest file that exists for it.

No. A download reads the same public file your browser loads when you view the post. Instagram sends no notification for it and it does not show up in anyone's activity.
